In the world of intimate relationships, there’s a special place where spirituality and connection meet. It is a sacred space where souls deeply connect as we move back and forth between separateness and union.
…It is the pleasure of the flower to yield its honey to the bee.
– Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet
…for to the bee, a flower is a fountain of life,
… And to the flower, a bee is a messenger of love,
…and to both, bee and flower, the giving and the receiving of pleasure is a need and an ecstasy.
In this spiritual realm, the unasked but ever-present questions are who are we, and who are we in this relationship? Unlike our usual worries about survival and success, our spirits crave love, empathy, kindness, and truth. These are the values that are central in creating strong relationships, where both partners feel valued and understood.
However, in today’s busy and complex lifestyles, we often overlook spirituality. While there are plenty of self-help books on building confidence, making money, and climbing up the ladder of success, we rarely talk about spiritual growth in relationships. Many times, spirituality is associated with God and religion, which is often a turnoff to people for a variety of reasons. Within our Multidimensional Relational Therapy (MDRT) paradigm, we talk about spirituality as the embodiment of spiritual values such as kindness, gratitude, authenticity, and love.
Over our many decades of working with individuals and couples, we’ve seen how incorporating these values has added to and rounded out many couples’ difficulties. This creates powerful bonds that survive over the years.
Our MDRT focuses on spiritual growth in relationships. By connecting with our spiritual selves, we can boost our self-esteem, create new meanings, and allow each individual to broaden and deepen their intimate connection with their partner. Through respect, empathy, and curiosity, couples have learned to break down walls, and create space for growth and understanding.
On the journey of self-discovery and healing, we all face the tough questions of closeness and distance that arise in life. The key is being able to face these questions with honesty and openness despite our deepest fears. Can one openly acknowledge and share our deepest fears with our partner? Can we express our heart’s desires and feel safe to do so? These questions and others push us to be real, honest, and transparent in our relationships.
Spiritual growth is key to unlocking the full potential of who we are as separate individuals and who we are with our intimate others. By prioritizing love over ego, we can transform ourselves and our relationships. Through MDRT, individuals and couples explore self-awareness and spiritual connection, guided by love and truth.
In the realm of sexual intimacy, spirituality lights the way to deeper connections and fulfillment. By being mindful, and embracing our spiritual-selves by living our spiritual values, we can heal past wounds. This helps us experience love in its purest form – unconditional and limitless.
